profiles & machinery - takealot

Durban-based Total Signs recently completed Takealot channel letter signage used at the online retailer’s new KwaZulu-Natal depot.

The signage is 14m wide, the tallest letter is 2.3m high and the diameter of the circle is nearly 3m. The total number of LED’s used is over 1500 modules. The signage was produced on an Exion V3 Machine that Total Signs purchased from Exion Corp.

‘At Exion, our main objective has always been to offer not only the best quality materials, but also to partner with our customers to help them achieve the best result,’ said Jay Kim, director at Exion.

‘Following consultation with the technical experts from Exion, it was apparent that turnaround time was key to customer satisfaction and that the V3 Machine was the only logical solution,’ commented Craig Naidoo from Total Signs.

‘Since purchasing the V3 machine, we have managed to drastically reduce the quoting and our fabrication time, which is obviously a huge benefit to our clients, not to mention our own productivity. The installation was quick and easy, and the training on both the machine and the software were effortless as they provided an accurate number of LEDs and power supply unit,’ added Naidoo.

‘This kind of happy ending is exactly what motivates us to go out each day and share our expertise with whomever may have a need in the signage industry,’ concluded Kim.

Neon Flex at GPS Expo

Exion Corp's

Neon flex at the GPS Expo

Exion Corp will demonstrate how to make silicon and LED separated neon-flex signage at the Graphics, Print and Sign Expo, taking place from 14-16 September at the Gallagher Convention Centre, 9am-5pm.

Exion’s two-part neon-flex solution (the silicon cover and zigzag LED strip are separate) is accurate as well as fast and easier to work with compared to the silicon integral neon-flex. For the silicon integral, there is a distance by which a user is governed for cutting between the LEDs, which can be between 20mm to 30mm, and may cause abnormal distortion to letters or shapes.

In the case of the two-part type, the user can use Exion’s 8mm and 6mm router bit to engrave the desired letter or shape, and then attach the zigzag strip to the engraving spot. After that, the user can clip on the desired colour of silicon.

All the accessories and materials are available:

– 8mm, 6mm silicon covers in various (12 different) colours.
– Zigzag (S-type) LED strips in various colours that fit over the top.
– 90 degree carving chisel (ENF-TOOL-90DG).
– Round carving chisel (ENF-TOOL-RG).
– 6mm and 8mm router bits (ENF-BIT-8×10/ENF-BIT-6×10).
– Clear wires for between the LED or LED to PSU.
– PSUs from 5watts to 1000watts.

proper machine maintenance

just like the cold affects us, the same happens to your machines in cold weather. As our bodies require some time to warm up before exercise, so do your machines especially the nail gun needs to warm up too, with a heat gun or hair drier before you start shooting. In the winter months the oil in the gun can become very thick and even begin to solidify and cause unnecessary damage.

(*critical maintenance period, May-August in South Africa)

The nail gun needs a fair amount of oil to soften up all the seals, washers and gasket otherwise you may cause damage to the rubber bumper and the O rings inside the gun. Hopefully you still remember that you need to lubricate with a couple of oil drops per week. Insert a few drops into the nail gun from the bottom of the guns handle where the compressed air comes in..) If you do cause any “cold damage” ultimately it will result in a leak and you will lose the power from the piston that drives the nail.

Performance is key- if your machinery is not performing then you will not perform. It is vital to always check and maintain all machinery in order to keep all aspects of your workshop up to date and machinery running at peak condition. Please share this information with who operate V3 machine.

Exion Corp's

Skyliner Led extrusions

Exion Corporation has launched the Skyliner building edge aluminium extrusion, which comes with a polycarbonate diffusion cover and ABS end caps. The product will be on show at the Graphics Print Sign Expo, taking place from 14-16 September at Gallagher Convention Centre.

Available sizes include 40mm (w) x 49mm (h) x 3000mm (l). The 49mm height gives enough space to prevent bright or dark spots from the LEDs. The aluminium channel allows for a neat casing to hold the LEDs and easier installation.

Skyliners can accommodate not only LED modules but also waterproof LED strips, so that clients can have various options of colour changing effects.

Duffield Signs recently completed a signage and building edge illumination project for The Courier Guy at Cosmo City, using amber and blue LED modules, also supplied by Exion. Charles Martens, the owner of Duffield Signs, said, ‘It was a challenge to work on the curved area, but we solved it with the help of my team and the Skyliner.’

Billion Signs in Rustenburg has installed the Skyliner on petrol station pylons. ‘The bright red illuminated line is very visible from the dark highway, and looks stunning,’ said the owner of Billion Signs.

Jay Kim of Exion Corporation said, ‘I strongly believe that signage companies in South Africa can offer far more techniques and designs to their clients with Skyliners. And their clients will be satisfied with the outcome as Skyliners will definitely increase the value of their brand and the buildings themselves.

Entrance to the event is free. For more information about the event and to pre-register online, please visit https://graphicsprintsign.com/johannesburg-2022/
